Bio-oil

Replace fossil fuels with renewable bio-oil.

Fortum Otso bio-oil is produces from renewable wood-based raw materials.

Fortum Otso bio-oil

Our ecological Fortum Otso bio-oil is produced from renewable wood-based raw materials by using fast pyrolysis technology. Fortum Otso bio-oil originates from the Finnish woods, which is why we have named it Otso, meaning ‘bear’ in Finnish.

Fortum Otso bio-oil’s greatest benefit is that it reduces C02-emissions by 90% compared to fossil fuels. Bio-oil can replace heavy or light fuel oil e.g. at heat plants and in industrial steam production. Bio-oil is ideal for applications where the steam or thermal loads fluctuate.

Cost-efficient alternative

Bio-oil is competitively priced and ideal for sites with logistics that are designed for liquid fuel. Fortum Otso bio-oil is virtually sulphur-free, and it is a cost-efficient alternative for meeting energy production emissions limits.

Fortum Otso bio-oil is produced in Joensuu, Finland

The ecological Fortum Otso bio-oil is produced from renewable wood-based raw materials like forest residues, wood chips or sawdust. We started our bio-oil production at our bio-oil plant in 2013. This plant is integrated with a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Our bio-oil plant utilises fast pyrolysis technology and is the first of its kind in the world on an industrial scale.

The Global District Energy Climate Awards organisation awarded our investment with an Innovation award in 2013.

Production

We have the readiness to add bio-oil production to several CHP plants in Finland and other countries.
